Overview: Popular consultations concerning mining in Latin America
Social actors and local politicians in Latin America increasingly apply popular consultations as a means of protest in conflicts over mining. Since 2002, 95 so called consultas populares took place in six countries of the region, many more are planned.
The research group GLOCON summarized hitherto realised or envisaged local popular consultations against mining in Latin America. The overview was compiled based on academic literature and media reports. It will be updated continuously without making claims to be exhaustive. We appreciate any information on possible errors or missing consultations, please send it to kristina.dietz@fu-berlin.de.
